The Eagles – Their Greatest Hits

Customer Reviews

Number of all time for a good reason5
My first car had a stereo radio and tape deck and one of the first songs to get my attention on it was “Lyin’ Eyes” because of the beautiful five-part harmonies on the song. It inspired me to buy the album and later to buy “Hotel California” and others, including “Hell Freezes Over” and “Long Road To Eden.” Some of these I own in both CD and LP.

These guys have the bestselling album of all time for good reason – it’s great music flawlessly performed. And even with the changes in personnel over the years (including Don Felder’s “firing”), they remain a must-hear act and if anything, they are keep getting better.

A Fairly True “Greatest”4
I wasn’t the biggest Eagles fan, for sure, and I’m normally not fond of “Greatest Hits” compilation albums.

However, this album gets a strong 4 stars from this reviewer, primarily because the music IS really good. Of course, if you hate the Eagles, you can’t stand a country music influence, or if you’re just biased by the fact that you’ve simply heard these songs too many times over the past 30-some years, then you will surely give this album a poor rating.

People continue to buy this compilation because it truly represents the best of this band’s first four releases, with one possible exception. Go ahead and listen to The Eagles (1972), Desperado (1973), On the Border (1974), and One of These Nights (1975); IF you like The Eagles’ music, I predict with almost-absolute certainty that the listening enjoyment from playing this one CD will FAR EXCEED what you will get out of any of those single albums, each of which contains some very non-memorable tracks.

I happen to have a fondness for their sophomore release “Desperado,” with its old-west, outlaw theme. However, it’s NOT like I can point to any particular songs on that album and claim that they were unjustly excluded from the Greatest Hits (the closest candidates might be “Outlaw Man” and “Bitter Creek”).

So what’s the exception I alluded to above? In my opinion, the title track from “On the Border” was the ONE best “pre-Hotel” Eagles song that was for some reason not included on this album. It could have easily replaced what I feel was the SAPPIEST song on the Greatest Hits, that being “Best of My Love,” which even this reviewer has a hard time listening to today.

One more interesting note (forgive me if this has been brought up in one of the many reviews which preceded mine): back in the early 70’s FM radio was just being born, and these Eagles songs predominantly became “hits” AFTER (and because of) the release of this Greatest Hits album! In other words, these songs were NOT popular AM radio hits when this album came out. This is very much unlike MOST greatest/best-of releases, which I tend to avoid because they are for the most part comprised of a bands most POPULAR tunes (instead of their truly BEST songs).

Thus, these songs were not chosen for this album because of their popularity, which sets THIS Greatest Hits compilation apart from most others. These songs WERE the best Eagles songs from that era, and that is why this album continues to sell so well. If you like (liked) The Eagles, this is the only pre-Hotel album you really need to own.

Eagles- Their Greatest Hits5
ESSENTIAL ALBUM!!! This album, along with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, flip-flop as the number one selling album of all-time. There are ten timeless classics here from the pre-Joe Walsh era of the Eagles. All but one of these songs charted & the one that didn’t should have. There are a few omissions but they’re minor ones.

The album opens with “Take It Easy” which peaked at #12, Jackson Browne was a co-writer on this song. Next is “Witchy Woman” with it’s American Indian sounding intro, it peaked at #9. “Lyin’ Eyes” was one of the first songs from a pop artist that crossed over into the country charts. It went to #3 on Adult Contemporary, #8 Country & #2 Pop Singles. “Already Gone”, one of their best rock songs went to #32. “Desperado” didn’t chart but I consider it to be in my 50 greatest songs ever. “One of These Nights” was a #1 hit. “Tequila Sunrise” only made it to #64 but I consider it to be one of their best songs. “Take It to the Limit” was written & sung by bassist Randy Meisner, it went to #4 Adult Contemporary & #4 Pop Singles. “Peaceful Easy Feeling” went to #22. The final song on the album, “The Best of My Love” has a world-weary sounding vocal by Don Henley, another great song by the Eagles; it went to #1Pop singles & #1 Adult Contemporary.

This is an outstanding compilation, good reasons for it being one of the two best selling albums of all-time.

Political movies about backroom negotiations need not be dry or heavy-handed, as Charlie Wilson’s War delightfully proves. Based on the true story of playboy congressman Wilson’s efforts to fund Afghanistan’s defense against the Soviet invasion of the 1980s, the film is borne along on breezy attitude and a peppery script by West Wing scribe Aaron Sorkin. Wilson, played by Tom Hanks (who also produced), is the perfect hero for this kind of tale, because there’s nothing perfect or heroic about him: He’s a highball-swilling, fanny-pinching gadabout who becomes radicalized on the issue of helping the Afghans against their mighty aggressor. He has help in the form of a right-wing Texas anti-Communist (Julia Roberts) with a genius for raising money, and a sardonic CIA operative (Philip Seymour Hoffman, stealing the show) who lacks all the social skills Wilson has in abundance. Sorkin’s syncopated speech is just the ticket for director Mike Nichols, who understands exactly how to keep this kind of political comedy popping (the complicated story comes in at a hair over 90 minutes, amazingly). Some scoundrels are on the right side of the angels, and the movie’s Charlie Wilson is one of them. –Robert Horton

Charlie Wilson’s War4
I really enjoyed this movie; Tom Hanks and Julia did a super job as usual. A peek at how politics really work.

The Cold War, now available in Primary colours…3
So what do you know – it’s possible to make a cheerful movie about the war…
Actually, the reason this movie feels so light and cheerful is that it is really about Charlie Wilson the man rather than the war. The movie tells the (based on true) story of the Texas Congressman who played a pivotal role in getting substantial funding to the Mujahedin in Afghanistan, eventually leading to the forced withdrawal of the Russians, thereby paving the way for the downfall of the Soviet Empire – as told by this movie at least. The interesting part is that Charlie Wilson was a womanizing party animal who was the last person many would have thought would tackle this issue.
The cast fit the bill perfectly – Tom Hanks surprises as the drinking Congressman, sharing a hot tub with strippers doing coke.. but retains the naivete that seems to have allowed him to say `why not’ when faced with the question of increasing funds to Afghan freedom fighters. The woman asking the questions is a rich, headstrong Texan woman played by Julia Roberts, and the man in the CIA actually getting the job done and providing the technical explanations, is played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
It’s shot well, in bright colours and plenty of lighting so we never have a dark moment, and acting is perfectly fine throughout. There is even just a touch of acknowledgement at the end that things were not so straightforward, and a warning that with the Russians gone, and without funding rebuilding infrastructure and schools, the `crazies’ would inevitably take the leading role. As of course they did.
On the downside, this is really a very superficial look at the issues, and a rather one-sided look at events in history. On the plus side, it’s a fun and entertaining introduction to the man and the history, that at 1hr 38 min never outlasts its welcome.

Charlie’s on crack cocaine….4
No such thing as a 5 million dollar war, or even a billion dollar war! According to today’s newspaper, 4 dollar gas is here to stay, and the economy is forever spirialing upwards, and out of the Feds, control. Oh yeah, the movie, well I fell asleep towards the ending, I don’t know if it was the film, or my new Lazyboy recliner, but it’s been happening alot lately.

Listen to it loud all the way through for the music then get the lyrics. I laugh every time I listen to it. It’s got everthing, hard and fast songs, slow and moving, sexy, great lyrics and a sense of humor. Best new music I’ve heard in ages.
Not for lovers of soft pop boy bands, rap, or sweet crooners. They rock, they don’t take it too seriously, and they have a lot of fun doing it.

Once again, Nickelback show that Rock will live forever….I am 43 years old, but have been a hard rock fan all my life. I grew up with the likes of Bon Jovi and Motley Crue, now 20-25 years later they are still rockin!!!
I salute all of you!
Don’t forget, Nickelback are not an ‘overnight’ sensation..they too have paid their dues.
All of ‘For All The Right Reasons’ is fantastic.
I will not review all the songs, as they can each hold their own. Listen to them all, and take from them what relates to you. That’s what albums like this do best. No, it is not about depression or despair, just real life situations, and how things relate.

Yesterday I read a review by a worldwide mag journalist that basically said, “Same song over and over. Guitars start, Chad comes in, laments about something, then guitars come back in, over and over..”
Well this clown should get another job…did he even listen properly to the lyrics??? Nickelback don’t write lyrics for the purpose of filling gaps…
Just take a listen to some of the garbage on radio today. I am tired of listening to ‘gangsta’ rap about ‘repressed people’, while these ‘repressed’ people flout massive gold jewellery and drive exotic cars….

Sorry people, but Rock has been around for nearly 55 years, and it will NOT go away! To all lovers of heavy hitting guitar riffs, and EXCITEMENT in music, check out ALL of Nickelbacks CD’s.
So to all those who ridicule ‘REAL’ musicians (those who can play an instrument AND hold a tune) other than scratching an old record back and forth and going ‘uh,uh,yeah,uh,yo..’..do not knock those with the ‘real’ talent.

To sum up, I for one, cannot wait for the next Nickelback release…

Review by:Hebertdespinosa

Nice and powerful rock songs became a rarity in today’s world, dominated by hip-hop and electronic beats with some vulgar lyrical content. Thank God, Nickelback is around to rescue us from this perverse world that we live in today.

“All the Right Reasons” is a long-standing Billboard Top 40 album for almost two years in a row and not by fate. These guys really play good music. They remain consistent to their roots. They are competent musicians. They are one of the few remains of the true rock music spirit with an advantage: these aren’t nasty or poser guys.

Honestly, the entire album is a pleasure. Picking one or another song and call it a favorite is just unfair to all of the others. Most records can be described in a few words and have a couple or so of good music. This one is truly an exception – a happy one.

like the cd that I bought because I liked some songs on it and I think that Nickelback is a good singer and I bought it because I liked some of the songs on it and wanted it so i could listen to it any time that i wanted too.

Review by:Mistress
After again, being saturated in a multitude of new bands for what seemed like the millionth time, the cream finally rose to the crop, and to me Nickelback seems to stand out.

The key to their success isn’t necessarily innovation or creativity, they aren’t Pink Floyd. But then again they don’t want to be, and that’s what makes their music fun. Nickelback gives us some traditional rock and roll that can be fast, slow and fun. Melodies we haven’t heard before and entertwined with themes that we are very familiar with: hurt, love, loss, rage, fun, and regret.

With the release of “All the right Reasons”, Nickelback makes a very “complete” album that flows well throughout. The song “photograph” is a power ballad for the modern day rock scene and one who’s popularity has not seemed to die down. “Fight for all the wrong reasons” has a great beat to it and is explosive as it is soothing. “Rockstar” is a great rock track that, like other songs of the theme, talks about what it takes to be one and the wants and needs that go along with the dream. A really fun, groovy track. Perhaps the best written song off the whole album, extremely well done.

“Side of a bullet” and “Savin Me” are more down and dirty fast paced rockers that defitley don’t take away from this albums overall senuine appeal. If Nickelback can continue putting out records like this, they’ll be talked about for a long time to come.

You Know It’s Eno4
It has that Brian Eno (producer) signature touch. I dig it and can’t wait to hear the rest.

Not impressed3
Maybe I need to listen to it 50 times and I’ll like it more. Thing is, with Coldplay’s previous efforts, I haven’t had to!

And Now For Something Completely Different…5
Forget everything you knew about Coldplay, “Speed of Sound,” “Clocks,” all have been turned upside-down in amazing and glorious fashion. Coldplay drops their trademark sound for something completely different, and the world of music might never be the same again.

The sound is possibly indie, definitely something out of the U.K., and certainly something new we’ve never heard before. It’s surreal, it’s art, it’s a new breed of rock. The lyrics are not as cryptic as previous efforts, but still not a spelled out song, with the only chorus making a shred of sense, “If you love me, won’t you let me know?” A haunting picture is painted of winter, and the song certainly paints and fits the mood.

Chris Martin never sounded better vocally, and they go perfectly with the song. As for catchiness, I don’t think this is one you’ll be singing in the grocery store, but you’ll remember the general feel of the song.
As for negatives, there isn’t any. Take the song, or leave it. It certainly won’t appeal to everyone.

Overall, not the first thing you’d think of when it comes to summer music, but I see a world in which this song becomes a big hit. Certainly over the pond. The song is a haunting painting of ole’, with originality, and the element that really makes the song, the mood. You might not find another thing like it, and you’re certainly not going to confuse it with something else. Let more U2 comparisons come in, they’re as good, and should be as successful. Take it or leave it, Coldplay never ceases to amaze.

See You Again

I love that Miley Cyrus is such a down to earth kind of girl. Hope she never loses that like other teen role models do. I bought it for my daughter’s birthday and she loves it too. I am 46 years old and even I know the words to the music and catch myself singing along! davdavdlc

by:hardheadeddlc

I am buying this music for my Granddaughter, Lizzy, who “all of a sudden” just loves Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana! I am buying this music, completely unheard, knowing and believing in anything supported by Walt Disney! After all, I grew up with the original Mouseketeers, my Mickey Mouse EAR CAP and ALL!!

by:salenamerriman

I am 31 and a mother to three girls. I watch her show on Disney and listen to her music. It has a great beat and I know it is something positive that I don’t have to worry about children listening to it. My 20 month old just lights up everytime it comes on. We have a copy of it in the two older girls rooms and one in the car and we never get tired of it. I would definately buy another should anything happen to the ones that we have. But I would say that their Dad is pretty tired of hearing it, lol.

Jerry Maguire

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise)is a dedicated, super-hyper sports agent, who wakes up in the middle of the night having panic and guilt feelings about the way all sports agents treat their clients. So he writes a memo to the other employees of the company about having more feelings for them and ends up getting fired. And so, we have this 1996 movie about Jerry Maguire being on his own.

At the beginning of the movie, Jerry loses his job, ditches his girl (Kelly Preston), and is abandoned by most of his clients. So what does he have? On the way out of the big corporate office where he had been working, he asks for help. Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), one of the secretaries, volunteers to leave with him. As she says later, Jerry “had me at first hello.”

Also, Jerry has Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) in an Academy Award winning Supporting Actor role. Rod is just as hyper as Jerry, and he is the only client that remains under Jerry’s auspices. The only problem is that Rod is a small but good football player who wants a 10 million dollar contract for 4 years from the Arizona Cardinals. He expects Jerry to “show me the money.”

The movie is about the friendship of Jerry and Rod, Jerry and Ray (Dorothy’s little boy), and the friendship and romance of Jerry and Dorothy. Their characters are well developed, and we grow to love them all. It is us against Big Corporation greed and the Big NFL owners and managers. It is also a wake-up call for us about all the behind-the-scenes hijinks that make up the sports world. And finally, it is a lesson in romantic relationships and the need for a real commitment before marriage.

This movie is really a romantic comedy which was nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor (Tom Cruise), which is very unusual for romantic comedies. Plus we are treated to music by Paul Mc Cartney and Bob Dylan. Rene Zellweger is great as Dorothy!

Beware for children! There is a blatant sexual scene at the beginning of the movie, and there are lots of locker room scenes with nude men walking around.

Fun tune5
I got this song for free from Starbucks when they had their daily iTunes download promotion. It was one of the few they had that I really liked because of the fun, skippy piano melody. Lately it’s getting plenty of air-play.

On the Top 40 radio show, Seacrest mentioned that her label told her to write a love song for her latest album…she didn’t want to…so there’s the lyric! Very cute song!

Ridiculously Fresh and New5
I am an African American female and I love Sara Bareilles’ ‘Love Song’ from the first moment I heard it. I love female singer/songwriters and she is #1 at the top of my list! She is a fresh new voice and I hope she continues to produce more music for an industry so in need of new talent.
I haven’t heard the rest of the album but I’ll keep in touch and let you know…

B

A Suprising Song That Harkens Back To “The One I Love”5
First off, Sara Bareilles is a great new musical talent, in the vein of the gaggle of female pop artist dominating the airwaves today. She sings great, and her piano work is incredible. The song could be compared to REM’s classic, “The One I Love,” in that, the title sounds, well, like a lovesong, but actually it’s like a break-up song. Bareilles does a great job at creating a radio-friendly upbeat pop song. And it all seems to work. Just the other day, I heard the song twice within a span of 15 minutes, on completely different radio stations.

Overall, a great little pop tune from a big talent. Music just seems to be coming up with a ton of surprises lately, and this song is no exception.

Shoot ‘Em Up

The Anti-James Bond5
This movie had SO many cool action/shoot out scenes. Clive Owen stars as a man who knows how to shoot and make the best use of a carrot. He’s a scruffy, but very handsome man who innocently stumbles upon a woman about to give birth. Some bad guys start shooting at the woman and he assists in birthing her child, all the while blowing away said bad guys. He protects the child from a really nasty head scumbag -playing against his usual, amiable and likable character type, by Paul Giamatti- and the body count climbs higher and higher. Clive enlists the help of a lactating prostitute ( the baby does need to eat ), and eventually a high ranking government/business consipracy is revealed. Lots of action, blood and great one-liners/puns. Oh, and the carrot bit…..take a, “stab” at what Clive uses it for….

Stargate SG-1

As a StarGate SG1 fan from day one, it was heartbreaking to see the series come to an end, but they couldn’t have ended on a higher note. This episode is absolutely wonderful – touching, exciting, and sad. I loved it. The effects are absolutely stunning. Full scale movie quality stuff. Best ever. Sniff!!
